How to Spend a Magical Weekend in Rome in January

Updated: Jan 16

Rome, the Eternal City, is a destination that dazzles year-round, but January offers a unique charm with fewer crowds, cooler weather, and an intimate atmosphere to soak up its rich history and culture. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, or a foodie, here's a detailed guide to spending a perfect weekend in Rome this January.

Day 1: Ancient Rome and Timeless Beauty

Morning: Start your weekend with a journey back in time at the Colosseum, the iconic amphitheater where gladiators once fought for glory. Arrive early to beat the crowds and take your time exploring this awe-inspiring structure. Imagine the roars of 50,000 spectators and marvel at the engineering feats of ancient Rome. Consider booking a guided tour for in-depth insights into its history. If you have pre-booked tickets remember to take a form of identification as they do check!

Afterward, walk to the nearby Roman Forum, the bustling heart of ancient Rome’s political, commercial, and religious life. Wander among the ruins of temples, basilicas, and arches as you piece together the stories of Rome's past.

Afternoon: Climb up to Palatine Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome, and soak in panoramic views of the city. According to legend, this is where Romulus founded Rome. Stroll through the lush gardens and remnants of imperial palaces while enjoying the tranquility of this historic site.

For lunch, head to a nearby trattoria for classic Roman dishes like carbonara or cacio e pepe. Look for spots frequented by locals to enjoy an authentic meal. There are some great spots to eat on the eastern side of the Colosseum with great views!

Evening: Make your way to the Trevi Fountain, beautifully illuminated at night. Toss a coin over your left shoulder to ensure your return to Rome, a time-honored tradition. Take some time to admire the intricate Baroque sculptures and the soothing sound of cascading water.

End your day with gelato or a cosy espresso from a nearby café. January evenings in Rome are perfect for leisurely strolls through its charming streets.

Day 2: Art, Architecture, and La Dolce Vita

Morning: Begin your second day at the Pantheon, an architectural masterpiece that has stood for nearly 2,000 years. Admire its massive dome, the oculus that opens to the sky, and the harmonious proportions of this ancient temple-turned-church. Take a moment to reflect on its history and the lives of the greats buried there, including Raphael.

From the Pantheon, it’s a short walk to Piazza Navona, one of Rome's most elegant squares. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, admire the fountains (especially Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers), and perhaps grab a cappuccino at one of the cafés lining the piazza.

Afternoon: Head to the Spanish Steps, an iconic meeting place and a perfect spot for people-watching. Climb to the top for a lovely view of the city and visit the Trinità dei Monti church. Nearby, you’ll find Via Condotti, a street filled with designer shops if you’re in the mood for a little shopping.

For lunch, try a cosy osteria and savor dishes like saltimbocca or artichokes (a seasonal delight in January). Pair your meal with a glass of local wine for a true Roman experience.

Possible Afternoon Activity: Dedicate some time to visiting the Borghese Gallery, nestled in the lush Villa Borghese Gardens. This world-class museum houses masterpieces by Bernini, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian. Stroll through its stunning galleries and marvel at sculptures like "Apollo and Daphne" and paintings like "The Boy with a Basket of Fruit." After your visit, take a leisurely walk in the surrounding gardens, one of Rome's most beautiful green spaces. We loved doing this as it gave us some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Evening: As the sun sets, take a walk along the Tiber River. The reflections of Rome’s bridges and buildings on the water create a romantic atmosphere. Stop by Campo de' Fiori, a lively square with great options for dinner and drinks. Many restaurants and wine bars in this area offer a warm ambiance, perfect for a January evening.

Additional Activities and Tips

  • Vatican City: If time allows, dedicate a few hours to exploring Vatican City. The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica are must-sees, but be sure to book tickets in advance to avoid long waits.

  • Cooking Class: Join a Roman cooking class and learn how to make pasta or pizza from scratch. It’s a fun and delicious way to immerse yourself in Italian culture.

  • Testaccio Neighborhood: For an off-the-beaten-path experience, visit Testaccio, a historic district known for its vibrant food scene. Explore the Testaccio Market for local specialties and fresh produce.

  • Churches: Rome is home to countless beautiful churches, many of which are free to enter. Consider visiting Santa Maria del Popolo or San Clemente, each with its own fascinating history and art.
