The Perfect Day on the Island of Capri

A visit to the enchanting island of Capri is a must-do while exploring southern Italy. Known for its stunning natural beauty, charming streets, and luxurious vibes, Capri offers a blend of relaxation and adventure. Starting your journey from Sorrento, here’s a guide to make the most of your day on this dreamy island.

Getting to Capri

Begin your day early by taking the ferry from Sorrento to Capri. The journey typically takes about 20-30 minutes, and morning ferries ensure you maximise your time on the island. As you approach, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of Capri’s cliffs rising dramatically from the turquoise sea.

Morning: Exploring Capri Town

Disembark at Marina Grande, the island’s main port, and take a funicular ride up to Capri Town. This charming hub is filled with boutique shops, cafés, and historic landmarks. Start your exploration with:

  • Piazza Umberto I: Known as La Piazzetta, this lively square is the heart of Capri Town. Grab a coffee at one of the cafés and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

  • Via Camerelle: Stroll along this famous street lined with high-end shops and local artisan boutiques. Even if you’re not shopping, the ambiance is delightful.

For a light morning snack, try a slice of torta caprese, a rich chocolate and almond cake that’s a local specialty.

Midday: Visit Anacapri and the Chair Lift Adventure

Take a short bus ride or taxi to Anacapri, a quieter and more traditional part of the island. Wander through its picturesque streets and visit the Church of San Michele, famous for its stunning majolica-tiled floor depicting the Garden of Eden.

The highlight of Anacapri is the Monte Solaro Chair Lift. This single-seat chair lift takes you to the highest point on the island, offering unparalleled views of the Bay of Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and the surrounding sea. At the summit, take your time to savour the vistas and snap some unforgettable photos.

Afternoon: Natural Wonders and Leisure

Descend from Monte Solaro and explore some of Capri’s natural wonders:

  • Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra): No trip to Capri is complete without a visit to the Blue Grotto. Known for its glowing blue water, this sea cave is accessible by small rowing boats. Note that visits depend on sea conditions, so check ahead.

  • Villa San Michele: This historic villa, built by Swedish physician Axel Munthe, offers breathtaking views and a beautiful garden. Its museum showcases artifacts and art collected by Munthe during his lifetime.

For lunch, dine at a traditional restaurant in Anacapri or Capri Town. Try fresh seafood dishes like spaghetti alle vongole (clams) or a classic Caprese salad with mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.

Evening: Sunset Views and Farewell

As the day winds down, return to Capri Town and head to the Gardens of Augustus. These beautifully manicured gardens offer panoramic views of the famous Faraglioni rock formations and the winding Via Krupp. It’s a serene spot to watch the sunset and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Before boarding your ferry back to Sorrento, enjoy a gelato or aperitivo at one of the waterfront cafés in Marina Grande. The golden light over the sea provides a magical end to your visit.

Additional Tips

  • Comfortable Shoes: Capri’s streets are steep and cobblestoned, so wear comfortable shoes for walking.

  • Plan Ahead: During peak seasons, ferries and popular attractions like the Blue Grotto can get busy. Booking tickets in advance is recommended.

  • Travel Light: Bring only what you need for the day to make navigating the island easier.

A day on Capri is a journey through natural beauty, cultural charm, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re taking in the views from Monte Solaro, marvelling at the Blue Grotto, or strolling through its vibrant towns, Capri promises a day of wonder and delight.
